Default Newbie Build

Recently sold my 66 Chevelle SS and it has left a huge empty spot in my garage! Looking at building a motorcycle from scratch but was wondering on how much it would cost and if I would get in over my head. I have mechanical experience but have never been around the building of motorcycles. Can anyone point me in the right area to start research and quote me a price?

It's all to do with money. What's you budget? And talent, how much can you fabricate yourself, can you weld etc.

You can buy a donor and start from there, fabbin the majority yourself etc

Or SPS sell kits and a bunch of others.

Or Exile sell top end kits.

The custom Harley world is vast, global and all encompassing. So figure where you're at first

Default Experience

I have basic mechanical experience but can't weld or anything like that. I have friends that could fabricate parts for me if need be. I'd like to keep everything under 10k if possible and figured their would be kits that could put me in that range.

over here 10k would be a tough one,, in fact nigh on impossible unless ya names Carl

IMO, buy a Shovel and build that up,, in fact TBH, thats the best advice i can give for sure

Default Shovel vs Softail and engine size?

Why would you recommend building a Shovel instead of a Softail?

Another question I have is about engine size. I understand bigger is always better but my Chevelle had a 489 that put out close to 600 hp. It was awesome, sounded great but drank gas and wasn't all that streatable. What size engine would be the most streatable for daily driving and cruising? I appreciate all the responses

You can build a Shovel softail.

Mines 98" and it's fine as a daily runner. It's just been let down this year by crap aftermarket parts like the starter etc. but I'm putting that right.

Also been let down by me constantly changing it

However it's a bored and stroked 80" 79 FXS and runs sweet as.

Evo mebe better as less grief, but they haven't got the heart of a Shovel which by most folks is considered the last "proper" Harley.

Having said that, the modern 96" Twinky is a mighty motor.

But wanting to build and with a 10k budget. I'd go Shuv. Ignore Paul, he's just had a baptism of fire

I think the way I'm going to build this bike is buy a rolling chassis or at least a Frame from someone once I figure out quality/price.

A HD engine/tranny off Ebay depending on my comfort level of buying engines off of Ebay

get a salaged softail and strip it for parts.

Not sure if I want to paint it myself or send of the fenders and tank yet to someone to do it. If I did it myself it would end up being flat black.

Whole build will probably run over 12k.
