what do you expect he lives on an island, they drive on the wrong side, max speed limit is 50 or 55 MPH. They got sheep crossings, no wait that's the northern half of the island.
What does he need to be comfortable for?

yeah this island sucks,, in fact i would go further and say its a cold wet rock stuck in the north sea.. its beyond crap...
however,, one thing,, where did the 50 mph thing come from coz its the second time ive heard it tonight and i always thought the 50 - 55 limit was a US thing..
one of the only good things about the UK is the fact that everyone hammers along,, national speed limit is meant to be 70, but if you try and stick to that you get fcking hammered for it ..
nope,, the ethos of speed and racing in this country is cool..
however,, as soon as the door opens i am outta here

But OJ, you still get the best type of riding. (The fun type)
Actually, I know how you feel since I couldn't imagine doing anything else at work. I will repost the photo since it somehow disappeared from my original post.

I'd love for you California LEOs to tell me why so many of the departments I see around here are riding Goldwings or BMWs. I think Dallas still rides HD, but I don't know of any other large departments in Texas that do. Seems like most of the West Coast departments I see are riding HD.

They have Austin now. Honda has San Antonio. I bet Beamer is doing some big fleet bid assistance to get those bikes in here. HD may not be willing to match the discounts. They look really weanie to be police bikes.

FB..most CA departments ARE on BEEMERS 1200RTP's & HONDAS ST1300 now...not really all that many on HD's! BEEMERS and HONDA are giving outrageous incentives on their bids for service and sales and because of their resale value and shrinking budgets most departments are using good business purchasing practices for once. HD's are very expensive. Haven't heard off all that many department's on Gold Wings...man, they are just TOO big, heavy and bulky...you can't manuever those beasts!
For us out here in CA (can't speak for any others) the starting, acceleration and maintenance/reliability factors of the BMW & Hondas are a big selling point. It's all about the money!!

I think the biggest factors are safety, dependability, and cost. The city of LA has the 2nd largest motor squad in the state so overall cost is a big factor.
When vying for the city contract 4 or 5 years ago, BMW insisted that all service work be done at an authorized BMW shop for the bike to be kept under warranty. Well, BMW would never be able to service all 400 of our motors since we service them at 3000 mi intervals so the city said NO..And, BMW refused to sell the city replacement parts at cost +10% like most other dealers do so again the city said NO.
Which of course led us into the current contract with HD which initially sounded great. Discounted parts, 2 year unlimited mileage warranty's and a three year locked in prices for the bikes. Well, since the initial purchase of 05, 06 and 07 bikes our fleet has unfortunately been plagued with mechanical problems. Most notable are the total engine failures due to overheating, electrical and brake related failures, starter failures as well as exhaust breakage. At one point we had two full time HD mechanics assigned at our central garage to perform the warranty repairs as the dealer was sick of having to pickup and deliver repaired bikes every other day and take up valuable stall space at the dealership.
Don't get me wrong folks, I love my current bike since the bugs were worked out of it. My '07 103ci 6 speed is the best of the 3 that I have been issued and I love it.
I think some of the heat related failures can be attributed to the recycled oil the city uses (even though approved by HD engineers) and the bad gas that smell like watered down kerosene but that of course is only MY opinion. Additionally, our bikes are ridden very slow in some of the worst heat/congestion problems, parade and special enforcement details, none of which is good for the air cooled motor. We start our bikes 40/50 times a day and they are ridden very hard during speed enforcement and dignitary escort details and such. Add to that the fact that some officers (not all) just refuse to take care of the bike and ride it as if it were their own property, simply destroying it by lack of good riding habits.
Personally, I will always own a Harley for personal use since I've never had a problem with my own bikes and wouldnt own anything else.....BUT if I had my choice I'd rather be riding my 03 Kawasaki police 1000 at work since it was a bulletproof motorcycle for police work. (I think OJ can attest to that)
Anyway thanks for listening
