Default ENGINE OIL CHANGE '02 FLHRCI

ok - first attempt at changing engine oil on 02 Road King. Where can I find the drain plug? Suggestions on how to replace filter with least mess. How much oil according to manual? All other info also appreciated.

Thanks

Just did my heritage softail, can't be that much different. Drain plug on frame right side about halfway back. 3 quarts. And you need a piece of cardboard or something to put under the filter when you unscrew the beast. It's gonna get wet, just minimize with rags as best you can! I'm an all thumbs wrench and I managed. Spose some other more tech oriented people can give better advice!

I think you will find your bagger to be about 3.5 quarts. Dont run the level all the way to full, try to leave it about .5 quart low or you will get a lot of misting into the air cleaner. a piece of cardboard might help but I find anything really hard to get in there. One thing I have done in the past is to take a phillips screwdriver and pop a hole in the bottom edge of the filter and then another one towards the top so it will vent, its a little easier to control where all the oil is going. Did you ever find your manual Green?

i use one of those plastic bags from a supermarket, grocery store,, whatever and wrap it under the filter and then try to create a channel for the oil to run down and out the LHS of the bike once the filter is removed,, works pretty well,, if you dont use something its a real mess...

OH and drill & lockwire your sump plug

yep - found a manual. gave in and called the dealer. thing is - the dealer is 3 hours away and I have not had time to make that run.

can anyone give me a good description as to where the drain plug is? looking at other places - people mentioned accidentaly draining the transmission.

thanks

Even if you did drain the trans it wouldnt be such a bad thing Green. I usually change mine at the same time anyway. The drain plug for the engine should be the closest one to you from the left side of the bike.

sk8rod - sorry about the "dead" Jeep. Thanks for the pic. So the only way I could make a mistake is if I cut the lock wire and drain that. Good to know.

Thanks again.

So I got it done. Used FLHT's idea about poking holes in the filter. I cut the bottom out of a plastic bottle and shaped it to go under the filter. The bottle caught the oil from the holes and the oil when I took the filter off. Still got a little oil on things but not as much as I could have.

Thanks FLHT and sk8rod
