Default Stage 1 Road King Classic Best Ideas

Okay. I'm trying to get a budget together for a Stage 1 on my '08 Road King Classic. I think I want true duals, new open air intake and remapped EFI for both. I am interested in the best combinations folks have experienced. I won't do the work myself, but my favorite factory tech will. I've heard most of the sales pitches, but I am really interested in actual experiences.

My priorities:

1. Full range performance—low end torque as well as top end
2. Moderate noise—I'm not interested in breaking any glass in town
3. Obviously best price from a reputable retailer—not just an eBay storefront
4. EFI Mapping and/or chipset as necessary now and for the future

Go easy. I'm a writer, not a mechanic. But I'm hoping to do something soon. Kat has quit slapping me when I bring the subject up.

FB...I heard the Vance & Hines Monster Ovals last weekend.......THEY ARE REALLY NICE!! Loud enough to hear on the road, but mellow enough where you're not going to get pinched by the man. You can hear music if you are so inclined to do so and on long rides will not be a nuisance. I gthink these pipes might be right up your alley...plus they are slip ons and obviously can be used with any header set-up.

Like Sk8rod said that is a good setup I think if you are going to change anything later like maybe a stage 2 or 3 but I put the V/H fuel pack on mine because I will not do any thing else to mine and I have to say it was like day and night different but I think they bothe coast about the same (V/H or PCIII) the PCIII I think you can do more with it if you want to but if I'm wrong please some one say so because I don't want to give false info

Hey, Cajun, did you need the floorboard extensions to get around the duals?

But for your question you don't need them

FB, Ill tell ya what I did. Ness big sucker, PCIII from fuel motto ready to go out of the box, Reinhart Slip Ons and converted my stock head pipes with a Fulsac true dual conversion kit, because I didnt want to have those clearance problems plus I didnt want the size of Reinharts head pipe to hold a little better back pressure.

I have had 0 problems form day one and Im about at 17 or 18,000 miles with it

for pipes, the SE give pretty good performance and remain street legal (except here in CA).
the v&h ovals have a really nice sound to them, but like everything else aftermarket they won't fit meet any states DB laws.

imo, rhinehart makes the best sounding pipe.

I went to the Kruzer Products webpage, but didn't see a listing for a true dual conversion kit for '08 bikes. Do you know if that's right, or if the site just isn't updated?

Don't know if there's anything out yet for the '09's as far as true duals. I was just going to go with slip-ons on my '08 Ultra but found that it could cause a problem. As I remember only 30% or so of the exhaust goes out the left side stock pipe and if you put a less restrictive muffler on that side on a stock system it will tend to scavage air back in when the right side exhausts. That's why I sold the Crusher mufflers I originally bought because they recommended blocking off the left muffler so all the exhaust exited the right side through the right pipe and cross-over. I finally went with Rinehart True Dual headers but now wish I'd kept the friggin' Crushers 'cause them MOFO's are class and have the perfect sound. Gonna buy another set this spring!!

Well here is what I did, I am very thrifty first of all. I searched e-bay and found a brand new set of eagle beak rineharts slip ons for $400.00, Then i kept searching and found a stage 1 K&N setup for $60 and continued my quest and found a used fuel pak with the ver 12 for $100.00 I love the set up and rineharts give good back pressure and good performance. I love them. Next I am going to do the fullsak conversion.

Good luck with your choice.

fb if you haven't purchased yet, I second talking to jamie at fuelmoto. he also came out with a custom baffle set for the rush slipons that even's out the scavenging and backpressures for an even better performance and sound. (he did that after I purchased my pcIII)

I'm running the rush slipons with 2"baffles, k&n air filter. I'm no motorhead either, and installed the pcIII and air filter myself. might save you a buck or three and not have to listen to the dealer mechs talk about voiding your warranty and such as I hear from others. my dealer didn't quibble at all.

Okay. Finally made my decision and ordered my gear yesterday. I'm gonna keep my stock exhaust, but add the SuperTrapp slip-ons, Power Commander III and Arlen Ness Big Sucker intake. Also adding a tach because it drives me nuts the factory didn't put one on. Should have the bike on a dyno for complete mapping within a week.
