Default modifying HD iron speedometer?

Has anybody popped open the speedometer on the iron? I have been wanting to get a tachometer but I dont want to load up the bike with a bunch of gauges, I like the look of the single gauge on top. So I got to thinking, in my old car I opened the bezel and replaced the bike lighting with white leds. So I know its doable on cars but is something like the doable on a bike? Basically what I was thinking was to open it up and to maybe somehow find a red translusent paint and paint the mph notches where each gear redlines. So i know where I'm at in that gear but without a tach.

Just a thought, what are you guys opinions?

here is a rough sketch of what I'm trying to describe.

That would be perfect but I was trying to stay away from that price tag, plus I wonder how easy it would be to see in the sunlight....
