Tires for a 99 Sportster 1200 XL
My 99 Sporty 1200XL has approximately 7500 miles on the original Dunlops and the tread depth is below standard. I need to replace them and am curious as to whether it is typical for tread on the factory tires to wear out this quickly.
Where is the best place to have tires mounted and installed......at the Harley Dealer or somewhere else? Any idea what the standard shop time for replacing the front and rear tires would be? Trying to figure out the finances....I assume the tires will run approx $125 each but have no idea as to the labor.
Any input as to tire recommendations and labor costs would be greatly appreciated.

go to an indy,, steer clear of dunlops and go for Metz or Avon.
7.5k out of tires is amazing,, my last set ran to 2k !

+1 Yes... Avon or Metz.... IF you are able to remove the wheels yourself, take the wheels to any tire shop for a cheap change.

Cant really say if 7500 is good or bad. I've never kept a set of tires on my bike, long enough to say .
BUT....... most folks say the original Dunlops last the longest. There a fairly hard compound rubber, compared to Metz, or Avons, so they dont stick to the road like either of those tires, but they should last longer.
Are you running the correct pressures in your tires, and checking them often .

Most indy shops around here charge around $40 to mount/balance if you buy the tires from them. My rear Dunlop had just over 9k on it and needs to be replaced, my front Dunlop has 3k on it and is starting to cup(80/90/21) This is the last set of Dunlops I'll own, life span out of the front sux and the handling characteristics of the Dunlops also sux. I'll be going to either Metz or Avon and possibly swapping out the 21" front rim for a 19" front rim so I can jump to a 110/90/19 and get some handling back.

+1 on the Dyna Beads they work very well and are pretty easy to use. Most places around here charge $30 to mount new tires.

I also picked up a balancing and truing stand that works great. Might want to look into one of those.
