Differentiating the Softail from the Dyna
Guys, I realize the Softail is a very different bike. But really the biggest difference you get for the big price increase is only a hidden rear suspension. That's what makes a Softail a Softail. You get a few extra tidbits like a center panel turny nob thing and of course the bikes all look a little bit different. But... nothing that would convince me to drop the cash on a Softtail... at all.
Here's what would get me to buy a Softail for the price they are: A BIGGER ENGINE!
Why does Harley's arguably most popular bike like not come stock with with 103"? Victory bikes in comparible price ranges come with a 106". The Japanese competition puts out some gnarly numbers too.
I just don't think the Softail should come with the same exact engine as a Dyna.
Thoughts?

Softy is balanced and a few horsepower down on ours. Dry sump with oil tank although ours is held inthe motor it's still not a normal setup. And ya got the trans mount difference.
But yeah,, I think they should have more power. However the chassis has a job with the amount they got now!!
So how about the Dynas get standard the 110" motor

It doesn't, the softail runs a 96B which for yer cash gets you some coke can shaped balancers on chains, a lower rev limit and external oil tank etc as sk8rod said... the big HP drag guys don't run B's for a reason; without mods the balancers destroy stuff. So, to get what you want HD R&D would need to re-invent the softail to cope with a non balanced engine and as you can see at any stealership its simpler for them to invest in some Wille Gay bolt on sparklies

HD has got to get that Willie dude out of the spotlight. No need for celeb status at HD.
Anyway, Softails need a bigger engine over the Dyna. Until then, no way in hell I'm buying one... well, unless they make the Rocker not Willie Gay looking.

Well I can say with a few mods it is a fine bike because I ran with a Dyna Wideglide with a stage 2 on it and it will run because I can run with them and I was told that by several people and it is a good ridding bike but that is only my two cent.

Well, if that's the case, then the Touring bikes need a really big engine.
