Default New member -'91 Dyna Sturgis

Hello everyone. Another new member here. I have been riding street bikes since 1997 and have owned several different Japanese bikes over the years. I currently have an '07 Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 and a 1991 Harley Dyna Sturgis. (I didn't even know the significance of the Dyna Sturgis model initially) I've worked on various problems on various bikes over the years, but have never had an engine apart completely. I think that is about to change due to the number of oil leaks that have developed on the Sturgis. For more info on the Sturgis please see massively long narrative below. I look forward to interacting with all of you and learning as much as I can from everyone. Currently located at Fort Hood, Texas.

The saga of the Sturgis:

An Army buddy of my inherited it when his father died. He planned on returning it to its former glory, but complications from the head injury that put him out of the Army and life in general got in the way. Fast forward a couple years and he calls me and asks if I am interested in buying a Harley. He ends up giving me a really sweet deal and I fly to California to get the bike and help him move out of the "Socialist Republic of California" - his words not mine. When I got it in 2017 it had been sitting outside under a tarp in California for a few years. The tank (dash, bib, etc), carburetor, battery box, seat, and some other bits and pieces were off, but they were pretty much all there in boxes. I got it back together and rode it 42 miles before I had to go to Korea with no issues other than a very small oil leak from back bottom of rear cylinder. I came back from Korea and when I went to load it on the trailer to move to next duty station the starter clutch went out. Since arriving at new duty station I (me. not a mechanic at a shop) have replaced the starter clutch, rebuilt the solenoid since I was in there, checked the chain tension, adjusted the clutch, rebuilt front forks, packed wheel bearings, got new tires(dealer did that), and probably a bunch of other stuff I'm forgetting. Still trying to get the carburetor tuned in perfectly, but it runs and I've put a couple hundred miles on it in the last week. Ride it to work today and there is oil coming out of the tappet blocks now. Looks like the full engine rebuild I've been putting off my happen sooner than I would have liked. I will post some pictures when I get a chance.
