Default Phishing Hoaxes~~~

In the words of Elmer Fudd.... be verry verry careful out there!

Recent hoaxes are looking real! The scammers send e-mails advising you that you have a package waiting or to log on and correct some mistake in your account. They look real (Amazon, FeDex) but they are not! BTW.... FedEx not FeDex... but they try to trick you. I even got a message from a very realistic BANK OF AMERICA site.

If you get something asking you to log on and update info, or download a .zip file to see what they are sending... make sure you exit the e-mail and log into the official site to review your account. 99.9% of the time there won't be a message on the official site for you.

I know a person who got one from PayPal about her account being compromised. She provided all her personal info and credit card numbers to straighten out the problem. She became a victim of identity theft.

Anti-Virus programs are great but you also have to be careful with e-mail alerts as well.

Yep, there are some slick phishing scams going on all around us on the web. Got one the other day that was very, very real looking. A paypal one. My account was locked, etc. I hovered over all the links on the page like support, contact, etc and the links all showed direct links to the paypal site. So far so good. The "click here" link didn't show where it went. So I logged in on another browser to my paypal account expecting a message like Papa S just said above. No message, seemed everything was fine. Hmmmm.

So I looked at the email again and the links ... but this time I opened it with Firefox using the Developer tools area where it says View Page Source. All browsers have similar tools where you can look through the code on a page. Seems the one link on the page that wasn't 'real' went to paypal.338475.com or somesuch. Bad news if I'd clicked that and entered any info, or maybe just going there would have given me a virus. Who knows, but I forwarded it to spoof@paypal.com and they sent me back a note saying that they appreciated the forward and that YES it was a phishing scheme.

But all that doesn't really concern me much. Cuz my first line of defense is to always enter Papa S's info when I suspect a phishing scam ... works every time!
