Great Rivalries: Harley-Davidson vs Honda
Worth a quick read!! Here's a taste:
Decades of Easy Rider, Boozefighters, and Hell's Angels folklore have painted an indelible image of what a Harley-Davidson motorcycle is and does. Harley fans are knuckle draggers focused solely on the sound and style of their machines. Performance doesn't count.

Harley riders do care about a fair amount of performance
But more importantly Its all about the soul of the machine. Harleys seem to be alive as do their riders when they are on them.

you know...I almost did go to a Gold Wing this time around before I got my Ultra Classic and as Mike put it..if it wasn't for the "soul" of the machine I'd been burnin rice right now.

Bah ...
Maybe on the rice rockets (since that is THEIR soul), but all the others trying to copy/clone an HD ... not even close.

a bike's soul (is there such a thing?) is what you make it.

My unit is hosting two Army Officers from Mongolia for the next few weeks. Yesterday my Commander asked me where we could take these guys to lunch to give them a "taste" of Alaskan cooking. Well only one placed popped in my mind and off we went. On the way there I asked one of the Mongolian Officers if he ever heard of HD and he said yes then went into a broken english tirade about how there was a biker gang that is using his country's name "Mongols". Anyhow when we got to the restarant I pointed across the street and asked the Mongolians if they wanted to cross the street after lunch and go to....the HD shop...yup I picked a place to eat that was next to my favorite spot.
Anyhow, we finished lunch and I took these guys in there and they were AMAZED. They sat on numerous bikes and took pictures. I also explained to the sales guy who they were so he let them fire up a few bikes. Man to see their faces while them scoots rumbled under them was priceless. One of the Mongolians got off the running scoot and said with a heavy Asian/Russian accent "Lots of power"
NOW TELL ME IF THEY WOULD HAVE FELT THE SAME WAY WITH A HONDA???

Sounded just like that Mike...but with a harsh Russian twang.
My point Joker is that Honda is found everywhere, even Mongolia. For them to see and sit on an HD...something that they only seen in movies was a great experience for them. Remember they come from a poor country which is still trying to recover from the years of Soviet control. (I was there in 2003, these people have very little)

pretty hard to nail it,, i always knew i would end up with HDs,, just had to do a bunch of racing chit first, get it out of my system..
fact is HDs to me have a depth to them not matched by the jap stuff, to me the rest are just dispatch bikes, nothing to fall for..
but there are also some early Triumphs, BSAs and Vincents i dig, they also have that depth to them..
but a Harley is just pure heaven,, nothing finer,, every time i ride mine i love it more and it aint even a shovel

oj - all this time i thought i was a snot ...
riv - understand. the experience was from seeing something they wouldn't otherwise see. but it was not just because it was HD.

Honda... I get bored by Honda. Good quality and all that. Just boring. Even their cars. I did have a good Honda mower once. Anyway, you can't customize a Honda like a Harley. There aren't people dedicated to building parts for Hondas like there are for Harleys. I want to have a relationship with my bike, not just ride it. That's the difference for me. Plus Japan deflates its currency in order to enable export to the U.S. thus destroying U.S. industry. Not to mention they refuse to stop killing whales.
