Fifth gear in my 2007 is annoying. It sounds like a damn corn picker. Nothing wrong with the transmission it just that damn straight cut gear. In the 5 speeds it was the 4th gear that was straight cut but you were never in 4th gear long enough for it to be annoying. I find myself in 5th gear in the 6 speed transmmision a lot longer.

You are right. Nothing earth shattering in the line-up. Pretty typical for HD.

I noticed that. I think I paid more money for my 2001 Wideglide that the current model is priced. At least they did not make the models other that than the Vrod water cooled.

Bought my first Harley in '07 (Heritage Softail) and had heard previously about the Fifth Gear noise. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary 'cause I figgered it was supposed to sound like that...and it is. I see they added another Trike to the line-up.

I love how I was one of the suckers that ended up with the 2009 and the damn gray engine. I never like it when the new model comes out of my model. Well, maybe mine will be a collector's item. Hahaha! They should have returned to black face gauges. The silver ones cause glare when riding in the sun.

Do you think it'd be possible to have the 5th gear in a 2009 switched out for the 2010 gear?

Not really any reason to do that. Seems like the more I ride mine the quieter it gets. Then again maybe I'm just gettin' used to it. The '07 to '09 gear boxes function "as advertized", shift great and have no problems I'm aware of.

Wood has natural oils tho that lubricate, so I wouldn't expect any noise.

And my box has been sweet as a nut,, perfect and slicker than something really slick

My 07 tranny makes noise in 5th particularly at lower to medium revs, sounds like a rock crusher. I switched to the Amsoil severe gear 75w 145 oil and most of that noise went away. HD explained that away as the straight cut 5th gear and a normal sound. Some buds of mine run some "duralube" oil additive product that they claim gets rid of a lot of the engine noise overall. I don't really want to add anything else to mine since the synthetic oil works so well for me. I always thought Harleys were supposed to make noise and vibrate, so I expect it and live with it. I didn't care for the way the 09 touring models funky exhaust system turned out, and don't see any kind of changes that make we want to go into debt for a new bike.

I'm living with it! It not bad enough for me to quite riding or to sell the Street Glide.

That is my next option. Do you use the Redline Shockproof made for Harley Davidsons or the regular Redline Shockproff?

I've never paid any attention to it nor have I really heard anything...my smile is so big & wide when I'm riding, that the facial muscles that make me smile constrict my ear canals, you'd think I have hearing problems!!!
