Default What the?

I went to my local HD dealer (for the first time.)

I bought an 03 Fatboy from the original owner last year. He has had this bike maintained by HD from the start. It now has 20K on it and runs like a top.

I asked the local dealer what it would cost to check the cam chain tensioner as they had not been checked before.

My local dealer said since it has 20K on it we should just put in new ones now as they would have it open to check the. Might as well put in new cam bearrings as they are usually worn out by 20K. (are you kidding me) the bearrings should go 150K.

He said I should probably go with the newer hydraulic tensioners as I would get a new oil pump with much more pressure.

Prices would be $682 for the standard spring tensioners and $1162 for the newer Screaming Eagle Hydraulic system. No price on the cam bearings (price didn't seem too bad for the spring system. But just replace them because your going to go inside to check them? I don't buy that. <pun not intended.

Thank GOD it wasn't a mortuary and I was looking to Pre Plan my funeral. I can here him now, "might as well get it done now. Just hop up here on the table and well have you in the box in 20 minutes. Why wait, it's got to be done sooner or later."

My problem is most of the local private shops (and there are several) are small. They keep the bikes they are working on outside. I saw one with the cylinders off and not even a rag in the crankcase to keep dirt and dust out of the motor. I don't want that to happen to my bike.

So my fellow riders, what would you do?

Thanks, CK

Unfortunately , being a HD dealer isn't always the boat to paradise so the smaller dealer MIGHT go over the top on pricing. I'm a MOCO fan but I always get more than one quote on the work I can't do .

I understand, but this is a big (50) new bikes on the floor at any time.

Their sales staff and prices are very fair.

To be fair, I have never had this (or any other dealer) work on this bike.

Shop rate is $120 US an hr.

20k is still low mileage, I wouldn't worry about the tensioner unless it starts sounding like the cam chain is trying to get through the casing. If you are going to replace the parts you said I'd look at S&S for the parts , pretty sure they would have a longer life than the standard HD part.

I did find out that you do have to check the cam bearings when you check the tensioners.

Thanks to all. CK
