thanks man! it is going to have a very heavy german influence on the style (without the weird tails they do) the powder sucks to work with... flat out sucks worste powder ever but it looks killllller, so after the engine cases are done the rest of the powder is in the trash and we will never shoot it again....
in the sun it is insane!!!!
i have only worked on rockets never built one of my own... this sucker is going to be FAST: re geared, full pipe, intake, pro jet kit, upgraded front brakes and braided lines, progressive springs and heavier fork oil, going to RIP
the wife is going to ride it till we can find her a harley to cut up and build something wild... her bob is for sale come spring

ha ha ha ha I have no idea, i mean i have coated EVERYTHING! even the motor mount spacers that you do not see the coil brackets...
they would be in a few g's i would guess with the type of powder we are using and the $ of the base coat and the $ of the top coat.

awe man thats gotta be nice :-) what exactly kind of a setup do you need to have to do the powder coating? is it kinda like a huge oven you have to "cure" the "paint.. (dont know powder coating terms

we have 2 tanks, on is a degreaser, one is a chemical tank to strip paint/powder. after that it goes though a parts cleaner and is dried. from there it is blasted. some parts require out gassing so then we will do an outgass cycle at the end of the night, while other parts can be powdered after blasting
our oven is 8ftx5ft x8ft. when me move into the new location the new oven will be 24x24x11 so that we can do frames for a trailer company out here. all in time though

whats an outgas cycle?
sorry for being so inquisitive
is there a proper technique you had to develop for powder coating?
i bet those ovens are a pretty penny?
cant wait to see more pics of the build!

most cast metals and parts that have been chromed have air pockets that are trapped i the metal, when you heat the item up those pockets are released and will bubble up into your powder... so you outgass an item at around 400 degrees for over 45 minutes to eliminate this issue, then give it a final blast, prep, and powder then cure it in a curring cycle, or however your are going to coat the item (cross link, base coat, top coat, effect, whatever)

yep i learned that... i tried to lay it super thin at 1 mill, then i wet sanded and polished them to get them as smooth as possible, I used an epoxy base super durrable powder to handle the oils... thought i was good to go till the tube got stuck in the lower, was a mess, ooh well. just in case i did not blast the heck out of the tubes, so i can just strip and polish them and have a perfectly good set of lowers again... was just a let down
polishing
I figured i would try... epic fail... but hey i tried!

so for the outgassing you could literally throw, say like a sissy bar, in a convetional oven and "bake" it at the 400?
where could a person go about picking up a decent sized oven for this process my friend? say like 4x6x5 or so? do they make them that small?
totall props for rockin this business man that is so bitchin

Teds fabrications sells some awesome ovens. but to be honest the oven is the smallest part of powder work... it is all in the prep, a compressor with a min of 15 - 20 CFM is the KEY, a good media booth, we have 2 one with steel grit 40 and one with 80 grit alum oxide, for prep and a clean work enviorment, the oven is the last step and the easiest of the process, the prep is the key or unprepped powder chips and flakes just like crap spray paint work no a sissy bar would prob not require an outgass cycle

the worst part for me was keeping the compressed air dry. on a budget, it was a bear. ran it through two cycles before i got clean air.
i bought one of teds ovens, worst thing i ever purchased. ended up building my own, 8x5x8.

really? sounds like you are running too much hose line, did you have a hard line or hoses? how many water catches per feet? moisture is a BEAR sometimes.. exp on hot days after 10 hours of running strait

feel ya on that one, we just got a huge 38CFM compressor, it is a monster. the old one we still use but mainly for the smaller blast cabinet and paint guns and blow lines.... i have put a new pump on it 3x's but she keeps running like a champ! the new one will get hooked up in the new shop, till then it will stay crated looking pretty in the corner

wow! big bike weekend! got a ton done on the fighter and just as much on the gold wing.... got the tank, f fender, front fairing, and chain case cover all painted.
5 coats semi gloss black, 4 coats of mat clear, PERFECTLY the color i wanted.... i was going to do some airbrush work on it but my buddies would not let me, i got the whole "less is more speach" and i have to say, they where right! this looks insane!
also tore appart the calipers and powdered those in gloss black to make them pop a bit on the flat, also coated the rest of the engine cases and all the rest of the orange, now it is just putting it all back together!

(the bolts where all stripped on the inside of this sucker, so rather than messing around trying to get them out, i color matched it to the plastics... looks wicked on the motor and does well to tie in the plastics)

some of the orange (passanger supports and heel guards, as well as the new mirrors)

gloss black brake calipers

engine cases

also got the carbs cleaned and the new jets in... looking good. my speed bleeders came in so when my rebuild kit for the calipers comes in i can get some stopping power on this sucker
